I’m not a fan of winter. The cold and gray keeps me inside.
After a while it can get depressing.
One of the nice things about winter is the bright light on clear days.
I like the contrast that light creates in black and white photographs.
See what else I’m doing.

Yes … the light is quite different in winter. Like your image!
Jan 28, 2014 @ 13:23:59
Thank you very much. You know photographers follow the light.

Striking images! I particularly like the photos of the nail and the patterns of the wood … hmmm, just looked at them again and realize that means I like them all. I can live with that statement!
Jan 28, 2014 @ 13:27:24
The nail is hammered into a grist mill that is way over 100 years old. Not the nail though. lol
Thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed the pictures.

I’m fascinated by old buildings, and how they are constructed. Bryggen, the ancient part of Bergen, offers so many photo opportunities for real photographers – I’d love to see how you would capture some of it – here’s an old wooden peg photo from an amateur photographic post I did.
But rusty nails tell their own story too, don’t they?
Jan 29, 2014 @ 19:09:30
Those are wonderful photos. I really enjoyed looking through them. Thanks so much for sharing.
If I’m paying attention there are lots of stories to photograph. Some are details, some are panoramic, some have people or animals and some don’t. The world is full of stories.
Jan 30, 2014 @ 06:08:42
Yes it is. And I think the photographs you share on your blog capture those stories.
I love history, and (for example) wonder about the section of the grist mill in your image. How many hands touched it in the last century? Just *think* of the changes in the world – and just your area – those hands have experienced!
That nail looks random – why was it hammered there?
What weather conditions have created the texture seen around it?
“If these walls could talk ….” can be updated to “if these images could talk.” Obviously I think they do – I just wish they’d answer questions too! 🙂

That is an interesting nail. It’s in one of the main structural beams. The beam has been worn away by time and water.
If these walls would just speak up. 🙂

Beautiful photos! Love the tree rings/patterns! These are all great in B&W! 🙂
Yes, I love the light and sun in the Winter! It feels so good on my face! And I love it coming in the windows and doors! 🙂
Won’t be long and Spring will sprung! 🙂
HUGS!!! 🙂
Jan 28, 2014 @ 17:09:36
I’m glad you enjoyed the pictures. Seems I’m taking more and more black and white and less color.
I know it isn’t long ’till spring. Looking at the snow in the front yRd and the closed roads doesn’t inspire me. lol
Hugs

PS…too bad we can’t go into a cave like da’ bears and then come out all rested in the Spring to steal a few pick-a-nick baskets! 😉
Jan 28, 2014 @ 17:10:00
The bears have it right lol
Jan 28, 2014 @ 17:02:37
Beautiful pictures. The dark, cold days make me want to sleep! I have to keep all the lights on in order to stay awake.
Jan 28, 2014 @ 17:18:18
Thank you.
I know what you mean. I’ve often thought I should be hibernating.
Jan 28, 2014 @ 17:43:01
Great shots Jr! We are getting a taste of “winter” tonight and tomorrow, but it will be back to the 70 by the weekend..thank goodness! Hugs
Jan 28, 2014 @ 18:31:20
There is snow on the ground here. It’s in the low 20s. I think we will make it to the 60s by the weekend. Enjoy the winter. You’re blessed it will be so short. 🙂 hugs

Yes I am…after spending 45 years in New England..I have enjoyed this change in my life.
Jan 29, 2014 @ 19:17:17
It’s takes a hardy soul to live in New England for that long.
Jan 28, 2014 @ 18:36:11
Impressive set, all very strong tonally and I truly love square format, it helps make cracking compositions….
Jan 28, 2014 @ 18:43:06
Thank you. I like square format. I use it fairly often. Of course that could change any time.
You have some lovely pics on your blog.
Jan 28, 2014 @ 18:49:41
Thanks, to be honest I don’t get to visit too many blogs so it was great to find yours.
Regards, John.
Jan 28, 2014 @ 20:22:04
I don’t get to either. There are a few I visit. It’s mostly people I’ve known for a long time.
Jan 28, 2014 @ 18:53:20
Lovely shots!
Jan 28, 2014 @ 20:24:41
Thank you. I dropped by and took a look at your blog. Neat canaries.
Jan 29, 2014 @ 16:19:39
Thanks. I’m not normally quite as obsessed with my canaries, they just surprised me last week by laying eggs so I’ve been talking about them incessantly.
Jan 29, 2014 @ 19:18:14
I think it’s great they laid eggs. What a wonderful experience to have.

Great b&w’s and I really like the design of the log in the last photo. Winter natural light does leave a lot to be desired. Some days it feels like the sky and the cement of the street meet and never change in shades of gray at all.
Jan 29, 2014 @ 19:04:41
You are right! I watch for long shadows and patterns and it can still be difficult.
