Here are the first pictures from our trip to the Audubon Aquarium.
Jellyfish are one of my favorite subjects to photograph in aquariums.
I was disappointed with the jellyfish pictures I got on this trip. I just wasn’t able to get many I liked.
Jesse had a great time playing with and around this pressure suit.
We all had a great time playing at the aquarium.
Back Story
Christy, Jesse, and I took the Amtrak Crescent from the train depot in Anniston AL to New Orleans for a week of adventure and photography. This train station is a classical revival depot and is listed in the National Registry of Historical Places. Jesse loves to ride the train. Heck, we all love to ride the train. We left August 8, 2013 and returned August 14th. Unfortunately Jeremy couldn’t go this time. He had to work.
Christy’s father was kind enough to drive us to the train station and pick us up so we wouldn’t have to leave a vehicle parked there for a week.
We stayed at our usual place, the historic 905 Royal Hotel in the French Quarter. The 905 Royal was built in the late 1890’s.

I finally managed to go on a swamp tour. I’ve been trying to for several years. We chose Jean Lafitte Swamp Tours for this excursion. We made a good choice and I’d use their service again.
It was a beautiful location.
We were riding in a boat just like this one.
This is our captain and tour guide. He was local to the area and was knowledgeable, informative, friendly, and humorous. He obviously loved the swamps and the plants and animals that live there.
Chips are good too.

We spent some time on Frenchman Street while we were in New Orleans. Among the many things we did while Christy was getting a sugar skull tattoo, Jesse and I played in the local park.
It was a beautiful day and we had fun climbing, running, laughing, sliding, and swinging.
Everyone we encountered was nice. Even the drug dealer conducting business on a nearby park bench was friendly.
All things have to end and the park closed at sunset. A gentleman riding a bicycle came through and asked us all to leave so he could lock the gates.

Here are a few pictures from our visit to the Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium.
We are at the intersection of La rue des Insects and Lovers’ Lane.
I love the rare blue crawfish. They are so pretty.
Jesse loved the water and the fish. The Koi were hoping he had some food. I was hoping he didn’t fall in the pool. He didn’t.
His favorite at the Insectarium is the Love Bugs. The windshield has a projection of a road and landscape. He loved driving through it. He remembered it from our last trip. This time he played and played there. When other children came along he got out and let them have a turn. No prompting. We weren’t in a hurry and eventually he had enough and we wandered/wondered to the next thing.
Oddly, a New Orleans butterfly garden is not complete without some alligators.
Talk about excellent marketing. You can’t exit these places without passing through the gift shop. rofl

ST. Louis Cemetery #2
Location: Claiborne Avenue between St. Louis and Iberville Streets
Entrance gates at Bienville and Conti Street
Hours:
Monday – Saturday: 9:00 am – 3:00 pm
Sunday: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
Holiday closings vary
The church consecrated St. Louis #2 for burials in August 1823.
Christy, Jesse, and I took one of the carriage cemetery tours. We visited two cemeteries as well as stopping at some of the other sites in the French Quarter.
“This is the largest early Creole cemetery in New Orleans. Above-ground tombs dot the urban setting following European Enlightenment ideals and architecture prominent in both France and Spain. St. Louis Cemetery No. 2 is one of the finest collections of antebellum mortuary art arranged in an orthogonal grid. Tomb design, carved sculpture, and the ironwork surrounding the tombs and cemetery offer a glimpse into the artistic and cultural hybrids of the Creole community. Notable architects such as James Gallier and J. N. B. de Pouilly designed some of the grave sites, and those interred include significant jazz musicians and local war heroes.” (source – http://www.wmf.org/project/st-louis-cemetery-no-2)
Vandalism, natural elements, and two hurricanes have critically damaged many of the tombs.
The last two pictures are of one possible burial site for Marie Laveau a renowned Voodoo practitioner. People still leave offerings to gain her blessing.
Even though toys had been left as offerings Jesse didn’t touch anything. He was very respectful of the shrine.

Christy, Jesse, and I went to Weogufka Creek. We visited the underwater bridge and Horse Stomp.
oops…
I forgot Spaz. She went with us too.
We were all excited, but nothing compares to the excitement of a child.
Christy and Jesse shared some really fun mother and son time. Of course you can’t suppress an addicted photographer. She got some good shots of Jesse while they were playing.
We had a nice picnic lunch. Christy packed juice, Mountain Dew, Corona, Pringles, chipolata spread, and sandwiches. Yummy! We had to eat in shifts. One ate while the other played in the creek with Jesse. FUN!
One of the coolest parts of visiting here is all the butterflies. We saw so many: big, little, yellow, black, and blue. They are almost always there except in the coldest parts of winter.
Adventures morph into new adventures. We headed home to hook up with Jeremy and have a delicious Christy made dinner: rotisserie chicken, mashed potatoes, and salad.
Pictures were taken with a Lumix GF3 sporting an Olympus 40-150mm lens. Editing was done in CS3.

Christy, Jesse, and I went to Foley, Gulf Shores, and Fairhope for a variety of reasons including fun!
We stayed in the Key West Inn. It wasn’t luxury, but it was clean, quiet, nice, and had a pool which we enjoyed.
These first pictures were taken there.
No stay in a motel or hotel is complete without the cleaning cart. I greatly appreciate the service and almost always tip when checking out.
The last picture was taken at Souvenir City. The pirate ship facade was cool.
Earlier I posted a color photo taken at the same shop.
These pictures were taken either with an iPhone 4s using the Hipstamatic app or a Lumix GF3. Any cropping or editing was done either wiith Snapseed or CS3.
