Shopping Is High Adventure

I went out in the world today to take care of some things. One of those was a stop at a grocery store. I listened while a customer explained all about rationing to the store manager. The entire time the store manager kept explaining there was no shortage and that store is fully stocked every morning. The obese, rationing spouting, customer had a buggy filled with meat. There was plenty of meat to purchase still on display. I got my little bit of stuff and went to get gas.

The price was right for me at $1.65 a gallon. The tank was below ¼. I walked inside to prepay and the waiting customers all adjusted so the 6’ distance was maintained while we awaited the clerk. While I was pumping, a younger man passed nearby and sneezed. He immediately started apologizing and explains about his allergies. It is full blown pollen season spring here. I felt sorry for him an wonder what had happened earlier to make him so sensitive. He sneezed. I didn’t even look up until he started apologizing.

Let me wrap this all up. I went outside and touched things others had touched. I spoke with people. I breathed air. I sanitized a lot. I washed my hands often. I tried to remain 6’ away. In 14 days I could be fighting for my life. Or not. What an adventure.

Be chill. Be safe. Don’t Panic! Wear your mask.

Thank you for stopping by. I appreciate all of you.

Card for Today

Intensity tarot card

“The figure in this card has taken on the shape of an arrow, moving with the single-pointed focus of one who knows precisely where he is going. He is moving so fast that he has become almost pure energy. But his intensity should not be mistaken for the manic energy that makes people drive their cars at top speed to get from point A to point B. That kind of intensity belongs to the horizontal world of space and time. The intensity represented by the Knight of Fire belongs to the vertical world of the present moment – a recognition that now is the only moment there is, and here is the only space.

When you act with the intensity of the Knight of Fire it is likely to create ripples in the waters around you. Some will feel uplifted and refreshed by your presence, others may feel threatened or annoyed. But the opinions of others matter little; nothing can hold you back right now.

Zen says: Think of all the great words and great teachings as your deadly enemy. Avoid them, because you have to find your own source. You have not to be a follower, an imitator. You have to be an original individual; you have to find your innermost core on your own, with no guide, no guiding scriptures. It is a dark night, but with the intense fire of inquiry you are bound to come to the sunrise.

Everybody who has burned with intense inquiry has found the sunrise. Others only believe. Those who believe are not religious, they are simply avoiding the great adventure of religion by believing.” – Osho Zen Tarot

My take away

After years of study and practice I have great faith.  I also have learned to be quiet and hear the still small voice.  I have a ways to go.

Card for a Rainy Day

Receptivity

Receptivity represents the feminine, receptive quality of water and of the emotions. Her arms are extended upwards to receive, and she is completely immersed in the water. She has no head, no busy and aggressive mind to hinder her pure receptivity. And as she is filled she is continuously emptying herself, overflowing, and receiving more. The lotus pattern or matrix that emerges from her represents the perfect harmony of the universe that becomes apparent when we are in tune with it.

The Queen of Water brings a time of unboundedness and gratitude for whatever life brings, without any expectations or demands. Neither duty or thought of merit or reward are important. Sensitivity, intuition and compassion are the qualities that shine forth now, dissolving all the obstacles that keep us separate from each other and from the whole.

Listening is one of the basic secrets of entering into the temple of God. Listening means passivity. Listening means forgetting yourself completely – only then can you listen.

When you listen attentively to somebody, you forget yourself. If you cannot forget yourself, you never listen. If you are too self-conscious about yourself, you simply pretend that you are listening – you don’t listen. You may nod your head; you may sometimes say yes and no, but you are not listening.

When you listen, you become just a passage, a passivity, a receptivity, a womb: you become feminine. And to arrive one has to become feminine. You cannot reach God as aggressive invaders, conquerors. You can reach God only…or it will be better to say God can reach you only when you are receptive, a feminine receptivity. When you become yin, a receptivity, the door is open – and you wait. Listening is the art for becoming passive.

Samsara and Nirvana

Non duality

When life is good, embrace it, experience it fully.

Death in Paradise

When life is bad, embrace it, experience it fully.

In quantum physics you will understand that nothing exists. So in reality there is no difference between samsara and nirvana, they are one.Wooden Nickel

The Fool

Today in the OSHO deck The Fool came out to play.

The Fool

The commentary says, “The card indicates that if you trust your intuition right now, your feeling of the ‘rightness’ of things, you cannot go wrong. Your actions may appear ‘foolish’ to others, or even to yourself, if you try to analyze them with the rational mind. But the ‘zero’ place occupied by the Fool is the numberless number where trust and innocence are the guides, not skepticism and past experience.”

Osho says, “Be a fool in the Taoist sense, in the Zen sense. Don´t try to create a wall of knowledge around you. Whatsoever experience comes to you, let it happen, and then go on dropping it. Go on cleaning your mind continuously; go on dying to the past so you remain in the present, herenow, as if just born, just a babe.”

I meld them into beginner’s mind.

Imagine

As children we had great imaginations.
Some say we loose it as we grow up.

Do we?

Adults:

Some imagine scary stuff.
Some imagine happy stuff.
Some imagine magic.
Some imagine so powerfully they need medication.
I imagine wonderful things as much as I possibly can.

What do you imagine?

Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.

Scene 1:

Wind Creek Casino Valet Parking Area

Lady O: Watching as the valet drives away, she says, “I just don’t trust that young man.”

Lady Y: “Why”.

Lady O: “I don’t know. I just don’t.”

Scene 2:

QOTD: Develop the knack of responding to whatever comes, as it comes. This “…is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself. Taking one step through life at a time, giving each step your complete attention and energy, can bring a wondrous new vitality and creativity to all that you do.” -Anjali Love

Scene 3:

When you are not present, when you are living in your head – thinking, brooding, calculating, worrying, making up scenarios, being cunning or clever- you are not present. You are missing life. Slowly, slowly slip out of those moments. Return to NOW.

Curiosity

“You are so loved. You are accepted. You are growing. You are a beautiful soul.” – Meg Heighway

I paid a lot of money and went to college for many years. I was seeking the answer. Truth. (Don’t play religion on me here. That’s not the point.)
I asked, “Why?” I asked the questions. I tried asking logic and science. I asked the questions (you know the ones.. The ones you ask.) I asked at the gates of religion and philosophy. I asked for years. I asked the question(s) we all ask.
What did I learn? Not THE answer.
I learned I was asking the wrong question(s).
Now I seek the question.
And the questioning…and the questioning…could it be…the answer? Curiosity? Wonder?
Open eyes?
Open ears?
Open mind?
Open heart?
Now!
Eternity?
Now?
Eternally?
Now?

Then again,
Maybe not.

Yin-ish or Yang-ish?

__ __

Update at the bottom.

I’m not an authority on this subject.  This is just what I think.

My friend John from Owl and Terrapin had a yin to hear about Yin. I didn’t think that would be a big deal, but it has turned out to be more Yang than I imagined. I’ve spent a few days doing a little research, consulting with one of my mentors, and getting my thoughts together.

A very little bit of history.

Yin is part of both Confucianism and Taoism. Confucius didn’t know about Yin. It became part to that system of thought after his death. Confucius taught moral and ethical behavior.  When Yin/Yang was absorbed by Confucianism, both Yin and Yang were endowed with moral attributes.  Yin and Yang, as part of a ethical dichotomy carry moral judgements.
Taoists see Yin a bit differently.  Yin is part of a wave, an oscillation. It isn’t part of the dichotomy of good and evil or black and white.

Yin has been described as feminine, cold, wet, slow, soft, passive, yielding, and diffuse. It has been associated with darkness, water, earth, the moon, and night.

In either system Yin has no meaning apart from Yang.  They give rise to each other. They compliment each other.  The difficulty in discussing yin arises from Yin’s reliance on Yang for its existence and meaning.  There is no wave it one half is missing.

Yin and Yang try to look as different as possible while being identical.  And reversible. It’s the idea of identical differences. Check out Alan Watts for more on this.
Yin is part of an energy wave.

Before “let there be light” (Genesis 1:3) was there only dark.  No….there was no dichotomy.  There was no dark.  “Let there be light” Yang and Yin.
If there was only Yang, you would create Yin.
There is nothing to do
and everything to do

The Divine
The word is not the thing
Don’t grasp
Expand containing all things

What can you know?  Words are obscured by their proliferation.
The 10,000 things
This from that
That from this
The affirmation is rooted in denial of the other?

They ate from עֵץ הַדַּעַת טוֹב וָרָע? (Genesis 3:6).  God tried to warn them.  Avoid the dichotomy. They didn’t.  And we still eat there.

It’s this and that.
Not this or that.

The illusion that one will win over the other is a silly illusion.

UPDATE

Same Differences

“Which meaning brings meaning
when brought to mind?
Which meaning brings meaning
when brought to heart?
Feel meaniong, know purpose.
Know meaning, feel purpose.
Witness the qualities within their differences
and know that the Tao…rests in their sameness.”

Go West Young Man

or
My Spiritual Journey v2

A lot happened between the previous installment  and the trip west. Interlude: While I was at Samford I was drafted to serve in Vietnam.  Being a hippie and an outspoken, highly visible, anti-war protestor, I wore underwear that said ‘give peace a chance’ on the butt to my physical.  Remember, I was living in Alabama at the time. It wasn’t always safe to be a hippie walking down the street.   At my physical, they decided I was a conscientious objector.   I spent my two years doing civilian duty and continued to protest the war. During these interlude years,  Jesus Freak me worked at His House, a Christian mission  helping the homeless, drug addicts, and runaways, had a gospel radio show, worked with special needs children, got married, spent 4 months traveling the country in a red VW micro bus, and discovered mushrooms.

The borders of my spiritual world began to expand as I transitioned from my narrow, rule based understanding of ‘truth’ to a more open understanding.  I was moving from intolerance to tolerance.  I was moving from being judgmental to being loving.

A Young Man and His New Wife Go West

With everything we owned packed in a Dodge van, no where to stay, no job prospects, and little money, we drove to Golden Gate Seminary  in Marin County, California.   Within the week, we had good paying jobs that came with a ranch style home and I was enrolled is seminary. Cool beans. The Universe provides.

There was a professor at the seminary who was getting a third PhD in biology.  He was easily in his 60s, maybe older.   I was curious and asked him why he was the pursuing this degree.  He said, ‘God created everything.  If you want to know about God learn about what He made.  It says a lot about how He thinks.’  Around the same time I started watching Alan Watts on TV.  The intersection of these two events were a pivotal point in my journey.   The professor’s ‘learn about what God made’ and Watts’ blend of Taoism and Zen changed my mindset.

I no longer wanted to explain ‘truth’, I wanted to see it clearly without the filter that is language.  The word is not the thing.   The name of a thing is a label.  How do you know it’s labeled correctly?

I have to toss this in the mix, learning to easily read the New Testament Bible in Greek was a real spiritual eye opener too.

Stay tuned for the next installment: The Bus Years

Don’t forget we travel in at least four dimensions:  spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical.   I know I left out time.  We invented it.  It’s part of the mental dimension.  I know I left out space.  It’s mostly empty.   It’s part of the physical dimension. MU

See what else I’m doing.
